I took this on Christmas Day, somewhere out in the countryside west of town. We'd had some snow the previous days, and a cold snap had finally caused the trees to shed the last of their leaves. The skies were a solid overcast, almost exactly the same shade of white as the snow that covered the now bare fields. It was stark, almost monochromatic, a typical Midwestern winter scene.

It's Back!

Rumors of the old rusty Cadillac's demise were premature. It seems that the owner hooked it up to a tractor and pulled it around to the back of the barn, to facilitate the harvest season. It's now parked back out front, in almost the same spot as before.

Incidentally, it seems that in the meantime the owner has painted some greyish-blue primer onto some of the rustier spots, particularly on the hood and roof. So....is the restoration finally starting?

I'm about to institute iPhone Wednesdays around here. I seem to be doing more phoneography than usual. Anyway, this is the Japanese garden at the Fabyan Forest Preserve in Batavia, Illinois. Fresh snow and monochrome!

The Old Rusty Cadillac, wearing a fresh coating of snow. I seldom manage to get out here first, before other people walk around it and leave footprints or wipe the snow off. It was nice to do so, just this one time. I tried to not leave footprints all over the place.

I also like how the melted bits on the windshield and grille form a smiley face. It was a fleeting smile, too, as it warmed up and rained the next day.

I've been staying local lately, due to a bunch of things but mainly the weather. It's been alternately really cold, cloudy and grey, raining, or snowing. Generally just unpleasant weather for outdoorsy activities like driving places and taking pictures of them.

This is the Fabyan Lighthouse on a particularly dim, snowy day. I do like this one, though. I think it has a really old-timey feel, like a vintage postcard or a local history book in a particularly dusty corner of the town hall.

When in doubt, go back to the Tea Garden in Batavia. It's such a picturesque little spot, and it's always fun to shoot in different lighting and weather conditions. I like shooting snowscapes, but don't often shoot when it's actually snowing-it seems that when it's falling hard enough to be picturesque it's also falling hard enough to make driving anywhere a pain. But I got lucky this day and the roads were pretty good, and I didn't get stuck or anything.

I like this one-it's got an old-timey feel, don't ya think?
